It is not as crazy as you might think.
Many well-tuned websites are set up in such a way that customers contact the business owner once they are ready to buy.
How Does Website Lead Generation Work?
There are a few steps that you need to take to get lead generation working on your website.
Let’s walk through them one by one, so you see how it all works.
Before you do anything else you have to make sure you have some content your customers want to read (or watch, if you do video).
This is what usually brings them to your website in the first place, and what keeps them coming back.
The idea is that your content is very useful, or helpful, and is centered around topics that relate to what you sell.
This content is then promoted on social media, and any other channels you have available (email, search, paid advertising) in order to bring people to your website.
So if you don’t have a blog already, I would start there.
This is the foundation of your lead generation machine!
Build Your Email List
This is something that often takes people a while to get started on (and we waited a few months until we started ours) because they are busy working on other things (website, social media, getting customers).
But you should get started on this as soon as you can, because it is one of the best things you can do to get customers.
The confusing part can be the “how”. After all, an email list is not something you build everyday.
So how do you get started?
The “How” of Email List Building
Here are the steps in short to give you a concrete plan to start building your email list right now:
- sign up for an email service provider (Aweber, MailChimp, GetResponse etc)
- create a lead magnet (something to give away, like an ebook, video course, email course, checklist)
- create some pre-made emails to go out automatically to new subscribers (including the giveaway – which is the first mail)
- add some email list signup forms to your site (sidebar, blog posts, about page)
- drive traffic to specific landing pages to signup for your giveaway
The above list is a quick summary, and I know there is a lot more to it. But I wanted to give you the bare bones, so you see the big picture.
How Does It Generate Leads?
The idea is that you want to “capture” people who are interested in what you are saying, doing or selling and stay in touch with them.
Your content brings them to your site, and you entice them to sign up to your email list with a giveaway.
These enticements can be scattered throughout your website, and should catch their attention (via headlines, color and so on).
Once they are on your email list, you keep in touch with them via automated emails and non-automated if you like, which send them lots of valuable stuff (advice, links to old blog posts, ebooks etc).
After some emails, you will have established trust and a relationship, and you can start to suggest your services to people.
Steer clear of the hard sell, but you certainly can let people know what you are selling – after all, it could be very helpful to them. Especially if it solves a problem related to why they signed up in the first place.
